The Indian Education System - What's Wrong?
21 February 2019 7:24PM: Yea I am really on a spree today as this is my 3rd post on one day. Indian Education System has always been one of my favorite topics to read about because as an Indian, I have been through it particularly in my school days and I have experienced it all. Today I will share my experiences on what I have been through, maybe not everything but the main points. So here we go, I will be going in points.
- CBSE, it's one of the most primary board in the Indian schools and if I define it in simple words it's basically the education board of mugging up things. You don't gain knowledge, you just mug up stuff as much as you can and it doesn't really matter if you understand the concept or not. Like you mugged up a topic today and tomorrow is your exam. You did well in exam and got great marks but after a couple of days you forgot what you mugged up. You didn't gain knowledge. What's the point? You just got marks and did not gain knowledge or how you can apply it. See that's one of the problem.
- The textbooks we have are outdated, well most of them are as I researched. We are taught things that applied years and years back and now doesn't make much sense at present time.
- Things that are taught has mostly no use of practical. We are not taught on how we can apply the information practically. Indian Education System does not teach us skills which is one of the most important things.
- It kills creativity and the urge to do innovation. Only thing that matters is marks as told before, the intellect of the student is calculated on the basis of marks, it doesn't matter if the other person has better practical knowledge than the one who got less marks.
- If seriously instead of just letting us mug up things, schools teach how to apply all the knowledge practically, we can do so much better and take India to the next level. It will help us succeed more in life and we can do innovations like never before. People will see Indians like never before, we have a lot of potential but the only way to light it is to make changes in the education system because it is the root.
- You have probably heard the phrase that we Indians only follow other Indians and don't care about what we actually want to do in our life, the rat race. Particularly the engineering race, many students pursue for engineering without the actual intention to become an engineer, they do it because the society values engineers more, family pressure, job security and much more but they end up being unemployed. Many students follow the race to crack IIT JEE exams to stand up higher in the society and under pressure (also job security), most of us fail to crack it and then they face extreme depression. They pursue it even if they aren't interested in doing engineering at all. They just do it because others are doing it, this is somewhat true with Doctors too
- Most Indian parents want their children to pursue for engineering or doctor because society values them more. These children may want to do something else in life, like pursue a career in dancing, music, art, being a writer, go in sports etc. but they never really get the opportunity. However slowly the mentality is changing as the society is getting aware but still this problem exists at a very massive scale.
- Instead of letting students mug up and cram up stuff, their concepts should be made clear from the roots and from the basics. They should be told about how to apply them practically and actually show them. This is acquiring real knowledge, this will help them do something big and actually succeed. This is the real education.
- There's this quote saying "knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice". This says alot itself. Mugging up one night before exam and clearing it then forgetting what you actually mugged up, is that cool? That is the case of millions of students in India.
- There's this reservation and management quota system in Indian education system which a lot of students hate but I don't wanna get into that but yeah, that sucks.
- Kids at their initial stages are stressed up so much that they don't get to find their talents or find the fields they are good at and even if they do, they don't get the opportunity to make it as their career. Like say a boy loves playing tennis and is really good at it, he wants to make it as his career but his parents, society, school etc. thinks its stupid to even try pursuing it as a career and then he is demotivated (this doesn't happens everytime though its just an example). They are made up study and mug up subjects they don't have interest at, what's the point of having education like this?
- Students get less options to pursue and are limited to the subjects they can study. It doesn't matter if they like it or not, they gotta pursue it which makes them feel demotivated and stressed. If you do what you don't like, you obviously won't succeed in it and in life.
- There's one thing I should definitely mention and it's that marks are given more emphasis than the knowledge. Marks is basically the most important thing in Indian Education System, if you score 95/100 but have poor concept knowledge, you got this because of mugging but as marks is everything, you will be considered brilliant. If you score 50/100 but know the concepts very well and understood them, but as you got less marks you won't be considered brilliant or anything, getting higher marks is more important. You get what I am trying to say right? Look this case isn't true all the time but I will say majority of the time. I have been through this.
I can add more points to this but I guess it's enough for now. Damn I am really loving blogging now.
